Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

The western diamondback rattlesnake[3] or Texas diamond-back[4] (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous rattlesnake species found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is likely responsible for the majority of snakebite fatalities in northern Mexico and the greatest number of snakebites in the U.S.[5] No subspecies are currently recognized.[3]

It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6,500 feet (2,000 m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico. Currently, western diamondback rattlesnakes are not threatened or endangered.

Well, howdy! I'm a Western Rattlesnake. I'm a poisonous snake, and I usually shake my rattle to warn folks that I'm around. Unless of course, I wanna eat 'em. Then, I stay real quiet.

My mouth can stretch real wide so I can eat somethin' that's bigger than my head. It's not the prettiest thing you'll ever see, but it sure helps me swallow my dinner. I don't chew my food - I let my insides do the work.

My 'pit organ' is a special gizmo in my face that helps me pick up the heat of an animal I'm thinkin' about eatin'. I can check out the size of animals and where they are, even in the dark! They never know what hit 'em.

I use my teeth but never chew To cross me, pay a toll I first inject and then collect My victims swallowed whole.

A moonlight stroll in grass Isn't something you should fear The body heat from your big feet Will tell me to steer clear.

I'm not a toy in baby's crib Beside the teddy bear Make no mistake, the sound I make Should tell you to beware.

I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird. My nose might look long and funny, but, hey, I have to keep my tongue somewhere! Like other bats I fly at night looking for food. But my food is the nectar from cactus and agave flowers which I slurp up with my long tongue. It only takes a second to visit each flower. That makes me one busy bat.
