Gila Monster

The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum, /ˈhiːlə/ HEE-lə) is a species of venomous lizard native to the Southwestern United States and the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. A heavy, typically slow-moving lizard, up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) long, the Gila monster is the only venomous lizard native to the United States. Its venomous close relatives, the four beaded lizards (all former subspecies of Heloderma horridum) inhabit Mexico and Guatemala.[2][3] The Gila monster is sluggish in nature, so not generally dangerous and very rarely a real threat to humans. Yet, its exaggeratedly fearsome reputation has led to its sometimes being killed, in spite of being protected by state law in Arizona.

I am a Gila Monster. I'm about two feet long and one of only two kinds of poisonous lizards in the whole world. That's quite an honor! I am easily recognized by my beadlike scales. I am truly a handsome fellow.

Unlike a snake who injects its venom, I need to chew and chew and chew on my victims to get my poison into them. Night is when I most like to come out to hunt. Mice are nice, but raw eggs are a treat I can't resist.

Sometimes, food is hard to find in the desert. That's why I store extra fat in my tail. My tail can grow to twice its size when I have plenty to eat, but I'll be able to live off that fat for months when food is scarce.

I've got to chew and chew to pump My poison through your veins Just sit right there in your easy chair And pretend it's Novocain.

When food is getting scarce And I have no lunch to pack, I'm lucky I can raid my tail To find a midnight snack.

My friends all call me Frankenstein Because they like my name At two feet long I'm no King Kong But I do enjoy the fame.

It is  monotypic  within the genus  Choeronycteris . [2]  The species is found in  El Salvador ,  Guatemala ,  Honduras ,  Mexico , and the  United States . I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird. My nose might look long and funny, but, hey, I have to keep my tongue somewhere! Like other bats I fly at night looking for food. But my food is the nectar from cactus and agave flowers which I slurp up with my long tongue. It only takes a second to visit each flower. That makes me one busy bat. When I drink from a flower, the flower's pollen brushes onto my fur. Because of me, all the flowers I visit get a little bit of pollen from each other....
