Elf Owl

 The elf owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is a small grayish-brown bird about the size of a sparrow found in the Southwestern United States, central Mexico, and the Baja California peninsula.[2][3] It has pale yellow eyes highlighted by thin white "eyebrows" and a gray bill with a horn-colored tip. The elf owl frequently inhabits woodpecker holes in saguaro cacti; it also nests in natural tree cavities.[4] It is nocturnal and feeds primarily on insects.

I am called an Elf Owl because for an owl I'm about the smallest. But don't let my size fool you. I'm still a very swift night hunter. I catch little creatures like shrews and mice and lots and lots of crunchy bugs.

Unlike other birds, we owls have our eyes on the front of our heads for better depth perception. But check this out! My eyes don't move, so I'm able to turn my head almost completely around instead. Weird, isn't it?

Sometimes I'll move into some other bird's old nest. Or I'll even share a nest with a woodpecker. Since I sleep in the day and she sleeps at night, we don't see too much of each other. We're perfect roommates!

I don't make toys for girls or boys So don't believe my name For fun instead I can swivel my head, My greatest claim to fame.

By pale moonlight I do recite "The Maiming of the Shrew" My roommate sighs and shuts her eyes To count the sheep anew.

When darkness falls my dinner crawls Across the desert floor I turn my head to watch while perched Upon my spiny door.

It is  monotypic  within the genus  Choeronycteris . [2]  The species is found in  El Salvador ,  Guatemala ,  Honduras ,  Mexico , and the  United States . I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird. My nose might look long and funny, but, hey, I have to keep my tongue somewhere! Like other bats I fly at night looking for food. But my food is the nectar from cactus and agave flowers which I slurp up with my long tongue. It only takes a second to visit each flower. That makes me one busy bat.
