Virginia Opossum

The opossum (/əˈpɒsəm/ or /pɒsəm/) is a marsupial of the order Didelphimorphia(/daɪˌdɛlfɪˈmɔːrfiə/) endemic to the Americas. The largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere, it comprises 110 or more species in 19 genera. Opossums originated in South America and entered North America in the Great American Interchange following the connection of the two continents. Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet, and reproductive habits make them successful colonizers and survivors in diverse locations and conditions.

In the United States and Canada, the only species found is the Virginia opossum. It is often simply referred to as an "opossum", and in North America they are commonly referred to as possums (sometimes rendered as ’possums in written form to indicate the dropped "o"). They should not be confused with the Australasian arboreal marsupials of suborder Phalangeriformes that are also called "possums" because of their resemblance to the Didelphimorphia.

No, no, I'm not a giant rat. I'm an Opossum. I'm about 3 feet long and 13 pounds. Night is the time I like to creep around looking for food. I like fruit, but insects are delizioso. And they're bite size!



Opossums are the only marsupials in North America. That means I have a pouch that my babies live in when they're tiny. Once they're finally strong enough, I coax them out into the world.

If I meet up with a predator and I don't have time to get away, I lay down and pretend I'm dead so the predator will be totally grossed out. Who wants to eat a dead opossum?

A peach with a crunchy bug Or a slithering slimy slug Is all I lack For a midnight snack When my tummy gives a tug.

In danger on the floor The Reaper at my door I jump ahead And pretend I'm dead Till the coast is clear once more.

I've a trait you won't forget A built-in bassinet! My babies snooze Like kangaroos As we wait for the sun to set.

It is  monotypic  within the genus  Choeronycteris . [2]  The species is found in  El Salvador ,  Guatemala ,  Honduras ,  Mexico , and the  United States . I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird. My nose might look long and funny, but, hey, I have to keep my tongue somewhere! Like other bats I fly at night looking for food. But my food is the nectar from cactus and agave flowers which I slurp up with my long tongue. It only takes a second to visit each flower. That makes me one busy bat.
