African Lion

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae and a member of the genusPanthera. It has a muscular, deep-chested body, short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions have a prominent mane. With a typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm (72–82 in) they are larger than females at 160–184 cm (63–72 in). It is a social species, forming groups called prides. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates.


I'm an African Lion, one of the biggest cats. Males can weigh 500 pounds. By the time we're three years old, we guys have this great looking hairy mane to show how important we are. Hey, the hairer the scarier, you know?

A group of us is called a "pride." When we can't see each other, one of us lets out a loud "ROAR." (Lion Roaring) The others answer the same way. That's how we keep track of each other and warn strangers to KEEP OUT.

I usually leave the hunting to the female. She's quicker and better at it than I am. I'll just wait until the exhausting part is done, and then I stroll on over and get the choice cuts. It's a darn good life.

It is  monotypic  within the genus  Choeronycteris . [2]  The species is found in  El Salvador ,  Guatemala ,  Honduras ,  Mexico , and the  United States . I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird. My nose might look long and funny, but, hey, I have to keep my tongue somewhere! Like other bats I fly at night looking for food. But my food is the nectar from cactus and agave flowers which I slurp up with my long tongue. It only takes a second to visit each flower. That makes me one busy bat.
