African Bush Elephant

The African elephant (Loxodonta) is a genus comprising two living elephant species, the African bush elephant (L. africana) and the smaller African forest elephant (L. cyclotis). Both are herbivores and live in groups. They have grey skin and differ in the size of their ears and tusks, and in the shape and size of their skulls.

Both species are listed as Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2004, and are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. Poaching for the illegal ivory trade is a threat in several range countries as well.

Loxodonta is one of two existing genera of the family Elephantidae. The name refers to the lozenge-shaped enamel of their molar teeth. Fossil remains of Loxodonta species have been excavated in Africa, dating to the Middle Pliocene.


I'm an African Elephant. At 10 feet tall and almost four tons I'm the largest animal walking on the Earth. As an older female I'm the leader of my herd. We stay on the move looking for the tastiest trees and shrubs.

My trunk is my most unique and useful feature. I use it to pick up food, drink with, and give myself a dustbath or shower. It's strong enough to break a branch but delicate enough to pick up a peanut.

I only have one baby every four or five years. When it's born, it's already three feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. I'll bet when you were born you only weighed about a hundred.

The baby's born with hefty girth Mom's trumpet hails her noble birth.

The newborn whimpers to be fed While mother steers the herd ahead.

She packs a trunk, the trip begun The ivory latch gleams in the sun.

I'm a Long-Tongued Bat, one of the smallest of the bats. In some ways I have a similar job to be a bee or a hummingbird.
